Netflix Instant: Five Comedy Shows You Should Watch

arrested development season 1 box cover artArrested Development (2003 - 2006)

Creator:  Mitchell Hurwitz
Starring:  Jason Bateman (The Change Up), Will Arnet (Blades of Glory), Michael Cera (Superbad), Portia de Rossi (Nip/Tuck), Jeffery Tambor (The Larry Sanders Show) David Cross (Men In Black), Jessica Walters (Archer)
Genre:  Straight Up Comedy
Episodes:  53 (All Seasons)

Why You Should Watch It:
The very unfortunate recipient of premature cancellation, Arrested Development is one of those shows you can watch over and over again (brag time, I’ve watched it 3 times) and you pick up on something new every time you watch it.  It has a very strong cast of characters that play well off each other and tons of recurring, often subtle, jokes.  Easily one of my favorite TV shows EVAR!!!

Blue Mountain State Season one box cover art
Blue Mountain State (2010 - )

Creator:  Eric Falconer, Chris Romano
Starring:  Darin Brooks, Alan Ritchson, Chris Romano, Ed Marinaro, Same Jones III (Smallville)
Genre:  Comedy, Sports
Episodes:  26 (All Seasons)

Why You Should Watch It:
The show follows the escapades of Alex Moran (Brooks), his roommate Sammy (Romano) and the rest of the fictional football powerhouse Blue Mountain State.  The entire premise of the show plays on stereotypes of college athletics and covers a range of topical subjects like steroids, sex and pocket pussies.  Thad (Ritchson) is one of the best characters on TV.

party down poster season 1 and two
Party Down (2009 - 2010)

Creator:  John Enbom (Veronica Mars), Dan Etheridge (Veronica Mars), Paul Rudd (I Love You, Man), Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars)
Starring:  Adam Scott (Parks and Rec), Ken Marino (Role Models), Ryan Hansen (Greek), Martin Starr (Adventureland), Lizzy Caplan (Mean Girls), Jane Lynch (Glee)
Genre:  Comedy
Episodes:  20 (All Seasons)

Why You Should Watch It:
Henry Pollard (Scott) is forced back into working for a catering company as his acting career stalls.  The rest of the catering crew consists of struggling actors as well minus Ron (Marino), the head of the operation.  Each episode is a different catering event that presents the crew with new challenges.  Hilariousness ensues!  It’s The Office on premium cable but unfortunately it won’t be returning for a 3rd season.

archer season 1 box cover art dvd
Archer (2009 - )

Creator: Matt Thompson (Space Ghost), Adam Reed (Sealab 2021)
Starring:  H. Jon Benjamin (Bob’s Burgers), Judy Greer (13 Going On 30), Chris Parnell (SNL), Jessica Walter (Arrested Development), Aisha Tyler (Balls of Fury)
Genre:  Animation, Comedy
Episodes:  10 Episodes (Season 1)

Why You Should Watch It:
H. Jon Benjamin plays the lead voice of super-spy Sterling Archer in animated series that parodies all things spy.  The show revolves around the agents and staff of ISIS, one of the world’s leading spy agency despite it’s extremely dysfunctional operation style.  There are a good number of reoccurring jokes and themes that help bring a sense of continuity between episodes.  It’s a pretty sexy show so you might pop a boner or two.

parks and recreation season one dvd box cover art
Parks and Recreation (2009 - )

Creator:  Greg Daniels (The Office), Michael Schur (The Office)
Starring:  Amy Poehler (SNL), Rashida Jones (I Love You, Man), Aziz Ansari (Funny People), Nick Offerman (Childrens Hospital), Aubrey Plaza (Scott Pilgram vs. the World), Chris Pratt (Everwood)
Episodes:  30 (Seasons 1 and 2)

Why You Should Watch It:
Leslie Knope (Poehler) is a hyper-enthusiastic public official that wants nothing more than to improve the quality of life in Pawnee, Indiana.  Each cast member plays their character to the fullest and you better prepare for barrels of laughs when you combine them all because it’s a riot.   It’s The Office in a Parks and Recreations Department which shouldn’t be surprising since they’re made by the same people.
