Jeff who lives at home netflix poster dvd cover

Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011)

Director: Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass
Writer: Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass
Starring: Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Judy Greer, Susan Sarandon
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Independent

Why You Should Watch It: Jeff who lives at home is a brotherly tale of one brother who is hopeless and one who is hopelessly a douche. With Susan Sarandon as their mother, she is having some odd issues of her own. It’s a fun indie comedy flick with Jason Segel and Ed Helms as the two brothers. Segel is looking especially pathetic and un-showered which I can relate to. Segel’s character still lives at home at 30 and is a “free thinker” of sorts. The name “Kevin” leads him on an adventure that leads to being robbed, helping out his brother, and eventually figuring some things out.

butter netflix movie poster funny yellow

Butter (2011)

Director: Jim Field Smith
Writer: Jason A. Micallef
Starring: Jennifer Garner, Yara Shahidi, Ty Burrell
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Independent

Why You Should Watch It: Butter is an indie comedy feel good movie that will make your heart melt. I hate myself so much for that I LITERALLY laughed out loud. In all seriousness, it’s a funny, cute movie that will leave a smile on your face. I attribute a lot of that to the cast, which includes Alias lady (Jennifer Garner), Dad from Modern Family (Ty Burrell), Hot girl from those Twilight movies apparently (Ashley Greene), Old lady from The Office (Phyllis Smith), Rob Corddry, Clueless girl (Alicia Silverstone), Wolverine and chick flick guy (Hugh Jackman), Annoying character girl who is also on The Daily Show (Kristen Schaal (Annoying but in the funniest way possible.)), Olivia Wilde, and the cutest little black girl that is becoming a big deal in Hollywood (Yara Shahidi). When a little orphan girl and a former butter sculpting champion's wife meet in a butter sculpting competition, hearts are broken, a “teenage” girl falls in love with a stripper and laughs are had. I wasn’t expecting much going into Butter but I left slippery and artery clogged. Still hating myself and laughing. Be sure to watch some of the credits, there are bloopers!

mission impossible ghost protocol netflix poster cover

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011)

Director: Brad Bird
Writer: Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec
Starring: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg
Genre: Action, Adventure, Thriller

Why You Should Watch It:  Can you believe they are still making these movies? Yeah, me neither. I’ll forgive them though because it’s not a terrible action film. The action and shots are grand, the story is decent with twists and turns, and there are a few (albeit forced) laughs. When a stereotypical bad guy steals some nuclear launch codes the good people at IMF, after being disenfranchised by the government, have to get them back. There are trains, there are tall buildings, there are sand storms, and there are awesome parking garages from the future. If you like action movies give it a watch. You'll like it.

The Usual Suspects Cover Art

The Usual Suspects (1995)

Director: Bryan Singer
Writer: Christopher McQuarrie
Starring: Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Palminteri, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Pollak, Stephen Baldwin
Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery

Why You Should Watch It: One of the best 'cops and robbers' stories of the past few decades with a stellar performance by Kevin Spacey. It has twists and turns till the last minute. It’s a little 90's in the story telling and is sort of slow; think Se7en. Read what we wrote about it back when it was previously available on Netflix Instant.

the machinist skinny christian bale netflix dvd cover bluray

The Machinist (2004)

Director: Brad Anderson
Writer: Scott Kosar
Starring: Christian Bale, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón
Genre: Thriller, Drama, Unnaturally Skinny

Why You Should Watch It: Looking for a drama thriller that has Christian Bale as an ultra skinny insomniac? Well The Machinist was made just for you. A machinist who can’t sleep is losing his mind. It’s a depressing film, frankly, but it is well made and well acted by Bale. It’s worth a watch if you like Bale, enjoy insomniac and anorexic characters trying to live a terrible existence, or if you are a machinist.

portlandia ifc tv show poster ad

Portlandia, Season 2 (2012)

Creator:  Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, Jonathan Krisel
Starring: Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, Kyle MacLachlan, Lots of great cameos
Genre: Comedy, Skit, Portland
Episodes: 84 (7 Seasons)
Network: IFC

Why You Should Watch It: Portlandia is a top notch skit comedy show based in the very "hipster" Portland. Why? Because the dream of the 90s is alive in Portland! (Portland...). I enjoyed season two even more than season one. Currently Season 3 is playing on IFC, if you get that channel through your cable provider. Definitely watch it if you enjoy comedy, like laughing, live in Portland, identified yourself in a previous life as a hipster, or are currently a self proclaimed hipster.

blue valentine gosling williams poster art <3Blue Valentine (2010)

Director: Derek Vianfrance
Writer: Derek Cianfrance, Joey Curtis, Cami Delavigne
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, Faith Wladyka, John Doman, Mike Vogel
Genre: Romantic, Drama

Wrote while watching:In the middle of watching now and really enjoying it. Ryan Gosling's acting is good. I have a feeling it will be one of those movies that leaves me slightly depressed and slightly hopeful at the end.

Why You Should Watch It: I was not incorrect. It's not necessarily a happy ending but the adventure to get there is moving, funny, touching, sad, and worth the watch. I would hardly call this indie romantic film a "chick flick". Male? Female? Dog? You can and most likely will enjoy this touching film about a rough marriage between Gosling and Williams. Bonus(es): Gosling's character is great. Williams is cute/sexy and gets naked.
