New on Netflix Instant Streaming: Walt Disney Classics

Netflix and The Walt Disney Company have recently come to an agreement for the Instant Streaming of Disney movies. Almost instantly (ahhh, get it?) after the announcement their cartoon classics have been showing up on Netflix. Obviously they are holding out a bit on some of the favorites but there are still some real great movies you can stream right now. So sit your kids down to watch some of your old favorites or just relive your childhood memories.

The Lion King and Aladdin are the only Disney films I remember well or have watched recently so I'm looking for some help filling in the Why You Should Watch. If you'd like to do one and get a link back to your site, send me a message on Twitter or email at 20SomethingAwesome [at] gmail [dot] com.

nightmare before christmas disney holiday movie cover dvdThe Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Director: Henry Selick
Writer: Tim Burton, Michael McDowell
Starring: Danny Elfman, Chris Sarandon, Catherine O'Hara,
Genre: Animation, Family, Fantasy, Holiday

Why You Should Watch It: I was clearly a deprived child, because I have never seen this movie. When it first came out, I think my parents decided it was too dark for me (I was six), and it was for whatever reason never around the house. It is considered quite the classic Tim Burton and Christmas movie though, so watch it. And for the sake of them, be sure your children see it.

alice in wonderland dvd masterpiece edition dvdAlice in Wonderland (1951)

Director: Lewis Carroll and 10 other people
Writer: Dave Chappelle, Neal Brennan
Starring: Kathryn Beaumont, Ed Wynn, Richard Haydn, Sterling Holloway, Verna Felton
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family, Disney, Trippy

Why You Should Watch It: Gather the family around, bring out the blotter papers and turn on Netflix. Just kidding, don't do acid with your kids. Wait till they go to bed! An instant classic of a Disney movie that will possibly give your children nightmares and a Disney movie that will make you think. It's a win-win.

disney dumbo new dvd coverDumbo (1941)

Director: Ben Sharpsteen and many other people
Writer: Helen Aberson, Harold Pearl, Joe Grant, Dick Huemer and many other people
Starring: Sterling Holloway, Edward Brophy, James Baskett
Genre: Animation, Family, Musical, Disney

Why You Should Watch It: Dumbo, another Disney movie I somehow never saw as a child, maybe my parents weren't fans of the not so subtle racism. Either way, watching it now as an "adult" I actually enjoyed this movie quite a bit. The early animation is interesting to see and impressive.

pocahontas indian movie disneyPocahontas (1995)

Director: Tamra Davis
Writer: Dave Chappelle, Neal Brennan
Starring: Dave Chappelle, Guillermo Diaz, Jim Breuer, Harland Williams, Rachel True
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Drama, Disney, Maybe some slight racisim

Why You Should Watch It: Pocahontas, a 90's Disney hit, is yet another Dinsey Classic your children should be able to say they have seen.

james and the giant peach walt disney fruitJames and the Giant Peach (1996)

Director: Henry Selick
Writer: Roald Dahl, Karey Kirkpatrick, Jonathan Roberts, Steve Bloom
Starring: Paul Terry, Joanna Lumley, Pete Postlethwaite, Richard Dreyfuss, Simon Callow, Susan Sarandon
Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family

Why You Should Watch It: I just watched this recently for the first time (see a pattern here with me not seeing Classic Disney Flicks?) and I'm not sure I appreciated it as much as some. Might be a little dark for very little ones, but it's certainly one I wish I had seen as a youngin'.

And some other new Disney movies that didn't quite make the cut of having an image and info:

The Aristocats (1970)

Pocahontas II (1998)

The Tigger Movie (2000)

Tinker Bell (2008)
