New on Netflix Instant Streaming: Adult Swim Shows, April 2013

Post by on April 9th 2013

It's been a few months since I've done a New on Netflix post. I took a slight hiatus from posting and the new content had left me mostly uninspired. With the addition of many Adult Swim and Cartoon Network shows I decided the time was right to get back in the game, as it were.

Here are the new Adult Swim shows now on Netflix Instant Streaming. I haven't seen them all but leave my thoughts anyways.

New on Netflix Instant Streaming: February Dump List

Post by on February 3rd 2013

The start of another month brings a solid stream of new movies and TV shows on Netflix Streaming. This includes the new Netflix Original Series, House of Cards. I gave House of Cards it's own post since  it was deserving. Here are a few movies that didn't warrant their own post.

ferris buellers day off dvd cover netflix

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Director: John Hughes
Writer: John Hughes
Starring: Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jnnifer Grey
Genre: Comedy, Drama, High School
PG-13

Why You Should Watch It: If you haven't seen this movie before please follow these easy to execute steps:

  1. Kill yourself.
  2. Come back to life.
  3. Watch this movie.
  4. Find one person in a different country who has also not seen this movie.
  5. Kill them.
  6. Bring them back to life.
  7. Watch the movie with them.
  8. Instruct them to repeat steps 1-8.

Yes, I realize they will have died twice and seen the movie at minimum three times. That's all part of my master plan.

liar liar cover jim carrey lawyer netflix

Liar Liar (1997)

Director: Tom Shadyac
Writer: Paul Guay, Stephen Mazur
Starring: Jim Carrey, Maura Tierney, Justin Cooper, Cary Elwes, Anne Haney, Jennifer Tilly
Genre: Comedy, Drama
PG-13

Why You Should Watch It: As a fourteen year old this was one of my favorite movies. Let's just say I was a Jim Carrey fan, but what pre-teen/teen wasn't during the bridging years of the new millennium?  Slightly less silly than his Ace Ventura character, Fletcher could still bring the PG-13 crude and silly together like no one else. I haven't watched this movie in probably five years but I remember it holding up well. Then again this was one of my favorite and most quoted movies as a young pup. Watch it, and if you don't like it please come and yell at me in the comments second below.

happy gilmore dvd cover netflix

Happy Gilmore (1996)

Director: Dennis Dugan
Writer: Tim Herlihy, Adam Sandler
Starring: Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Sports, Golf
PG-13

Why You Should Watch It: I recently read a review of this movie by someone who first watched the film when they were far too old. That, and they were for some reason taking it seriously. It's a 90's Adam Sandler movie. You know, the guy who sings funny songs about Hanukkah and lunch ladies. The only thing serious about this movie, is the laughs! Boom, zing, zap! So if you have never seen this child-humor comedy classic, turn off your brain and have a few laughs. If you have seen it, and enjoyed it, watch it again and annoy whoever you're watching it with by quoting it throughout.

tremors netflix cover dvd kevin bacon

Tremors (1990)

Director: Ron Underwood
Writer: S.S. Wilson, Brent Maddock
Starring: Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter
Genre: Sci-fi, Classic, Thriller
PG-13

Why You Should Watch It: Tremors might be Kevin Bacon's gift to the world. It might also be the greatest campy, desert monster, cult classic movie ever made. A dozen or so REAL characters encounter and deal with the wrath of a large worm like creature that can swim through the earth like a parasite swimming through your lower intestine. With a mix of laughs, Kevin Bacon, and some suspense this movie is definitely worth a watch.

They also have Tremors 2: Aftershocks and Tremors 3: Back to Perfection streaming.

Watch TV with 20SA: LOST

Post by on February 2nd 2013

Season 1

Season 2

Season 3

Season 4

Season 5

Season 6

Watch on Netflix Instant now.

I'm re-watching LOST for the first time since I originally sped through the first 5 seasons on Netflix in time to watch season 6 live. During my current LOST adventures I have been tweeting about it from time to time. I got a little bit of feedback from fellow LOST fans and decided maybe I should share more of this with other than just the Twitter world. So here we are.

This, like almost everything on 20 Something Awesome, will be a work in progress that once finished I will realize I could have done better. But, I persist.  I'm imagining things like polls about the show, my tweets, my deeper thoughts, some iconic images and anything else that I deem worthy. Perhaps if it goes even moderately well, I'll do it with my next Netflix TV Series conquest.

Take part in any of the polls, leave a comment, or share the page with your LOST loving friends.

Note: SPOILERS, obviously.

Season 3

I didn't have this idea until season 3 so I'm trying to back track on the thoughts and tweets I had. It's taking a bit of time. I will add new things and slowly fill in the beginning of the season and season 2. I didn't have much for season one so that is finished. It doesn't make sense but just imagine it has something to do with time travel and separate time lines of reality, like in the show, brotha.

Episode 10:

Oh yeah, Jack and Claire are half siblings. I didn't remember how often the flashbacks intertwined with each other.

Season 2

Coming soon...

Season 1

Who had the best flashback(s) in Season 1?

This was my first tweet about my adventures into rewatching LOST. It says 4am, but that doesn't seem correct. My NYE hashtag leads me to believe it was before midnight. But who knows and it doesn't really matter either way.

From the same watching session, this tweet which included a sexy picture and an idea stolen from InstaFlicka.

This is the point when I remembered all of the Holy book references and undertones with the characters and plot lines throughout the series. The problem is I know none of them and my lack of knowledge diminishes my overall ability to enjoy the show.

john locke lost jesus sitting water

As anyone who really gets into a show on Netflix or other streaming service, I find it hard to turn it off and go to bed. I meant no malice towards people actually suffering from life-altering sleep ailments. Learn more about Insomnia.

The episode when Boone dies is a real tear jerker. The song at the end was moving. In this fan made movie it doesn't exactly show how it played out in the show, but the song is the same.

Ending season 1, with high praise.  Season 1 in its own bubble would be a great show.

New on Netflix Instant Streaming: House of Cards [Netflix Original Series]

Post by on February 1st 2013

Recently I have only been doing the New on Netflix posts as a large "dump". I have been watching House of Cards all night and figured it deserved the recognition of its own post. So here it is.

house of cards poster kevin spacey peace sign blood hand

House of Cards (2013)

Creator: Beau Willimon
Starring: Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Kate Mara, Kristen Connolly, Corey Stoll
Genre: Drama, Politics, Thriller
Episodes: 13 Episodes (They call them "Chapters")
Network: Netflix
TV-MA

Why You Should Watch It: This wasn't Netflix's first original series (Lily Hammer), but it is the first that has reached this level of excitement. That excitement will be overtaken quickly when Arrested Development reaches the internet tubes in May 2013. Anyway, based on what I've heard and what I've watched so far, Kevin Spacey is the driving force behind that. The writing, story line and supporting acting certainly doesn't hurt, but Spacey's acting and character are great. Admittedly I have my own "moral quarrels" (reminds me of The Rural Juror) about Congressman Underwood's personal character but it is still interesting and fun to watch. Francis Underwood is from South Carolina (D) and is the US House of Representative's Majority Whip. He has more power than that name implies, to someone who doesn't know what the Majority Whip is at least, so with little political knowledge i'm still enjoying the show. Someone with more, let me know how enjoyable this is to watch. *cough*Comments*cough* There is sex, drugs, lies, cheating and more. It's everything you could want in a political drama. Give it a try!

This BONUS Review/Why You Should Watch It comes courtesy of David (@DScoul) from Twitter. He's a nice guy so read this and then follow him on twitter.

Although I got slightly delayed in watching House of Cards (about 9 hours since in my infinite generosity, I have shared my Netflix account with clearly too many people that don’t pick up their phones at 2am Central on a Friday morning when I need to watch a new Netflix original series), I was not disappointed. While I am a fan of shows such as The West Wing, I was excited to see that House of Cards did not have the preachy message or the awkward, often forced dialogue. No, the opening scene alone lets the viewer know that Frank Underwood is not someone who messes around.

When Mike and I first discussed our thoughts on House of Cards we had slightly differing opinions. He claimed that it was hard to root for Francis (Kevin Spacey) because he went into the show with a cynicism about government. I feel the exact opposite; I am rooting for him because I want to see where his master plan takes him. He’s obviously a liar and a cheat. He’s obviously very self-serving. But at the same time I think it’s these flaws and the plans that he makes that draw me to the character.

Today on Talk of the Nation on NPR they were discussing America’s favorite TV villains they like to root for. We’ve seen this type of character in Tony Soprano (The Sopranos) and Walter White (Breaking Bad) before House of Cards and I think that Spacey as Frank Underwood carries on this legacy. All three of them keep the viewer on the edge of their seat as their plans get more and more involved. Frank, as the audience can see, knows that at any moment, all of his work could come crashing down. I believe this is part of what makes House of Cards such a riveting watch.

In addition to Frank having evil methods, but seemingly good-intentioned motives, all of the rest of the characters seem to have serious flaws as well. Although I spent most of my time rooting for Frank, I found myself rooting at one point or another for the rest of them as well. None of them are good people, save for the guy who owns the BBQ joint, but they are all at least somewhat likeable.

I know that Netflix has ordered two seasons of the show. I personally hope that it gets renewed and that Netflix can establish itself as a major player in the original content game.

New on Netflix Instant Streaming: January Dump List [Part II]

Post by on January 26th 2013

Since January was a big month for new movies on Netflix I've decided to do an unprecedented Part Dos. See what else came out in January or even check out December's or November's Dump Lists.

lars and the real girl poster cover art pink

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

Director: Craig Gillespie
Writer: Nancy Oliver
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Independent
PG-13

Why You Should Watch It: I had heard good things about this movie for awhile and thanks to Netflix I finally saw. I was not disappointed. The acting, especially from Gosling was great. The story was extremely touching and quite humorous. A man who clearly is having some issues in life finds new happiness when he finds a girlfriend who happens to actually be a "Real Doll". The town rallies around him and his delusions. It's really good and no longer dubbed in German. Watch it.

primer poster cover black white netflix

Primer (2004)

Director: Shane Carruth
Writer: Shane Carruth
Starring: Shane Carruth, David Sullivan, Casey Gooden
Genre: Drama, Thriller, Sci-fi, Time Travel
PG-13

Why You Should Watch It: Primer is cool low budget time travel movie. It is obviously low budget but the acting and writing make up for it easily. The dialogue is often technical and the story line can be hard to follow, so multiple watches is not discouraged. There are plenty of twists and turns in this 70 minute film to keep you wanting more.

four brothers poster cover dvd netflix

Four Brothers (2005)

Director: John Singleton
Writer: David Elliot, Paul Lovett
Starring: Marky Mark, Tyrese Gibson, Garrett Hedlund
Genre: Action, Crime, Drama
R

Why You Should Watch It: Four Brothers is the story of four interracial brothers from Detroit who all had the same foster mother. When she is murdered in a store heist gone deadly, they seek revenge on the plague that was the cause. It's a decent action/revenge movie. Worth a watch if you're into that sort of thing.

planes trains automoviles dvd cover art netfli poster

Planes Trains and Automobiles (1987)

Director: John Hughes
Writer: John Hughes
Starring: Steve Martin, John Candy, Laila Robins
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Classic
R

Why You Should Watch It: Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a classic road trip comedy. Two mean keep running into each other trying to get back in time for Thanksgiving. John Candy, the lovable goof, is unknowingly annoying but means nothing but the best, pairs up with Steve Martin the stuck up business man who just wants to get home. PTA could easily be thrown into the frustrating comedy category but it somehow elevates above that. If you haven't seen this movie and enjoy comedy, stop what you are doing, and watch it.
