Watch TV with 20SA: LOST
Season 1 |
Season 2 |
Season 3 |
Season 4 |
Season 5 |
Season 6 |
I'm re-watching LOST for the first time since I originally sped through the first 5 seasons on Netflix in time to watch season 6 live. During my current LOST adventures I have been tweeting about it from time to time. I got a little bit of feedback from fellow LOST fans and decided maybe I should share more of this with other than just the Twitter world. So here we are.
This, like almost everything on 20 Something Awesome, will be a work in progress that once finished I will realize I could have done better. But, I persist. I'm imagining things like polls about the show, my tweets, my deeper thoughts, some iconic images and anything else that I deem worthy. Perhaps if it goes even moderately well, I'll do it with my next Netflix TV Series conquest.
Take part in any of the polls, leave a comment, or share the page with your LOST loving friends.
Note: SPOILERS, obviously.
Season 3
I didn't have this idea until season 3 so I'm trying to back track on the thoughts and tweets I had. It's taking a bit of time. I will add new things and slowly fill in the beginning of the season and season 2. I didn't have much for season one so that is finished. It doesn't make sense but just imagine it has something to do with time travel and separate time lines of reality, like in the show, brotha.

Oh yeah, Jack and Claire are half siblings. I didn't remember how often the flashbacks intertwined with each other.
Season 2
Coming soon...
This was my first tweet about my adventures into rewatching LOST. It says 4am, but that doesn't seem correct. My NYE hashtag leads me to believe it was before midnight. But who knows and it doesn't really matter either way.

From the same watching session, this tweet which included a sexy picture and an idea stolen from InstaFlicka.

This is the point when I remembered all of the Holy book references and undertones with the characters and plot lines throughout the series. The problem is I know none of them and my lack of knowledge diminishes my overall ability to enjoy the show.
So he's like jesus or something right? John Locke. #lost #netflix yfrog.com/j2luhjoj

As anyone who really gets into a show on Netflix or other streaming service, I find it hard to turn it off and go to bed. I meant no malice towards people actually suffering from life-altering sleep ailments. Learn more about Insomnia.
Wish I could not sleep and just watch Lost. I hope insomniacs realize how good they got it.

The episode when Boone dies is a real tear jerker. The song at the end was moving. In this fan made movie it doesn't exactly show how it played out in the show, but the song is the same.
Alright, one more episode of Lost. Almost cried at the end of the last one. Boone died. Good score in the last scene. #netflix

Ending season 1, with high praise. Season 1 in its own bubble would be a great show.
I had forgotten how awesome Season One of Lost is. Great TV drama. Watch it if you haven't. #netflix

New on Netflix Instant Streaming: House of Cards [Netflix Original Series]
Recently I have only been doing the New on Netflix posts as a large "dump". I have been watching House of Cards all night and figured it deserved the recognition of its own post. So here it is.

House of Cards (2013)
Creator: Beau Willimon
Starring: Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, Kate Mara, Kristen Connolly, Corey Stoll
Genre: Drama, Politics, Thriller
Episodes: 13 Episodes (They call them "Chapters")
Network: Netflix
TV-MA
Why You Should Watch It: This wasn't Netflix's first original series (Lily Hammer), but it is the first that has reached this level of excitement. That excitement will be overtaken quickly when Arrested Development reaches the internet tubes in May 2013. Anyway, based on what I've heard and what I've watched so far, Kevin Spacey is the driving force behind that. The writing, story line and supporting acting certainly doesn't hurt, but Spacey's acting and character are great. Admittedly I have my own "moral quarrels" (reminds me of The Rural Juror) about Congressman Underwood's personal character but it is still interesting and fun to watch. Francis Underwood is from South Carolina (D) and is the US House of Representative's Majority Whip. He has more power than that name implies, to someone who doesn't know what the Majority Whip is at least, so with little political knowledge i'm still enjoying the show. Someone with more, let me know how enjoyable this is to watch. *cough*Comments*cough* There is sex, drugs, lies, cheating and more. It's everything you could want in a political drama. Give it a try!
This BONUS Review/Why You Should Watch It comes courtesy of David (@DScoul) from Twitter. He's a nice guy so read this and then follow him on twitter.
Although I got slightly delayed in watching House of Cards (about 9 hours since in my infinite generosity, I have shared my Netflix account with clearly too many people that don’t pick up their phones at 2am Central on a Friday morning when I need to watch a new Netflix original series), I was not disappointed. While I am a fan of shows such as The West Wing, I was excited to see that House of Cards did not have the preachy message or the awkward, often forced dialogue. No, the opening scene alone lets the viewer know that Frank Underwood is not someone who messes around.
When Mike and I first discussed our thoughts on House of Cards we had slightly differing opinions. He claimed that it was hard to root for Francis (Kevin Spacey) because he went into the show with a cynicism about government. I feel the exact opposite; I am rooting for him because I want to see where his master plan takes him. He’s obviously a liar and a cheat. He’s obviously very self-serving. But at the same time I think it’s these flaws and the plans that he makes that draw me to the character.
Today on Talk of the Nation on NPR they were discussing America’s favorite TV villains they like to root for. We’ve seen this type of character in Tony Soprano (The Sopranos) and Walter White (Breaking Bad) before House of Cards and I think that Spacey as Frank Underwood carries on this legacy. All three of them keep the viewer on the edge of their seat as their plans get more and more involved. Frank, as the audience can see, knows that at any moment, all of his work could come crashing down. I believe this is part of what makes House of Cards such a riveting watch.
In addition to Frank having evil methods, but seemingly good-intentioned motives, all of the rest of the characters seem to have serious flaws as well. Although I spent most of my time rooting for Frank, I found myself rooting at one point or another for the rest of them as well. None of them are good people, save for the guy who owns the BBQ joint, but they are all at least somewhat likeable.
I know that Netflix has ordered two seasons of the show. I personally hope that it gets renewed and that Netflix can establish itself as a major player in the original content game.
New on Netflix Instant Streaming: January Dump List [Part II]
Since January was a big month for new movies on Netflix I've decided to do an unprecedented Part Dos. See what else came out in January or even check out December's or November's Dump Lists.

Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Director: Craig Gillespie
Writer: Nancy Oliver
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Emily Mortimer, Paul Schneider
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Independent
PG-13
Why You Should Watch It: I had heard good things about this movie for awhile and thanks to Netflix I finally saw. I was not disappointed. The acting, especially from Gosling was great. The story was extremely touching and quite humorous. A man who clearly is having some issues in life finds new happiness when he finds a girlfriend who happens to actually be a "Real Doll". The town rallies around him and his delusions. It's really good and no longer dubbed in German. Watch it.

Primer (2004)
Director: Shane Carruth
Writer: Shane Carruth
Starring: Shane Carruth, David Sullivan, Casey Gooden
Genre: Drama, Thriller, Sci-fi, Time Travel
PG-13
Why You Should Watch It: Primer is cool low budget time travel movie. It is obviously low budget but the acting and writing make up for it easily. The dialogue is often technical and the story line can be hard to follow, so multiple watches is not discouraged. There are plenty of twists and turns in this 70 minute film to keep you wanting more.

Four Brothers (2005)
Director: John Singleton
Writer: David Elliot, Paul Lovett
Starring: Marky Mark, Tyrese Gibson, Garrett Hedlund
Genre: Action, Crime, Drama
R
Why You Should Watch It: Four Brothers is the story of four interracial brothers from Detroit who all had the same foster mother. When she is murdered in a store heist gone deadly, they seek revenge on the plague that was the cause. It's a decent action/revenge movie. Worth a watch if you're into that sort of thing.

Planes Trains and Automobiles (1987)
Director: John Hughes
Writer: John Hughes
Starring: Steve Martin, John Candy, Laila Robins
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Classic
R
Why You Should Watch It: Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a classic road trip comedy. Two mean keep running into each other trying to get back in time for Thanksgiving. John Candy, the lovable goof, is unknowingly annoying but means nothing but the best, pairs up with Steve Martin the stuck up business man who just wants to get home. PTA could easily be thrown into the frustrating comedy category but it somehow elevates above that. If you haven't seen this movie and enjoy comedy, stop what you are doing, and watch it.

New on Netflix Instant Streaming: January Dump List
With the New Year brings lots of new content from Netflix. They also have reinstated some old favorites that were previously discontinued.
Give these a watch or if you have any other great New on Netflix movies leave a comment below.

Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011)
Director: Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass
Writer: Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass
Starring: Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Judy Greer, Susan Sarandon
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Independent
R
Why You Should Watch It: Jeff who lives at home is a brotherly tale of one brother who is hopeless and one who is hopelessly a douche. With Susan Sarandon as their mother, she is having some odd issues of her own. It’s a fun indie comedy flick with Jason Segel and Ed Helms as the two brothers. Segel is looking especially pathetic and un-showered which I can relate to. Segel’s character still lives at home at 30 and is a “free thinker” of sorts. The name “Kevin” leads him on an adventure that leads to being robbed, helping out his brother, and eventually figuring some things out.
Have you seen this movie? Did you like it?

Butter (2011)
Director: Jim Field Smith
Writer: Jason A. Micallef
Starring: Jennifer Garner, Yara Shahidi, Ty Burrell
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Independent
R
Why You Should Watch It: Butter is an indie comedy feel good movie that will make your heart melt. I hate myself so much for that I LITERALLY laughed out loud. In all seriousness, it’s a funny, cute movie that will leave a smile on your face. I attribute a lot of that to the cast, which includes Alias lady (Jennifer Garner), Dad from Modern Family (Ty Burrell), Hot girl from those Twilight movies apparently (Ashley Greene), Old lady from The Office (Phyllis Smith), Rob Corddry, Clueless girl (Alicia Silverstone), Wolverine and chick flick guy (Hugh Jackman), Annoying character girl who is also on The Daily Show (Kristen Schaal (Annoying but in the funniest way possible.)), Olivia Wilde, and the cutest little black girl that is becoming a big deal in Hollywood (Yara Shahidi). When a little orphan girl and a former butter sculpting champion's wife meet in a butter sculpting competition, hearts are broken, a “teenage” girl falls in love with a stripper and laughs are had. I wasn’t expecting much going into Butter but I left slippery and artery clogged. Still hating myself and laughing. Be sure to watch some of the credits, there are bloopers!

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011)
Director: Brad Bird
Writer: Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec
Starring: Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg
Genre: Action, Adventure, Thriller
PG-13
Why You Should Watch It: Can you believe they are still making these movies? Yeah, me neither. I’ll forgive them though because it’s not a terrible action film. The action and shots are grand, the story is decent with twists and turns, and there are a few (albeit forced) laughs. When a stereotypical bad guy steals some nuclear launch codes the good people at IMF, after being disenfranchised by the government, have to get them back. There are trains, there are tall buildings, there are sand storms, and there are awesome parking garages from the future. If you like action movies give it a watch. You'll like it.

The Usual Suspects (1995)
Director: Bryan Singer
Writer: Christopher McQuarrie
Starring: Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Chazz Palminteri, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Pollak, Stephen Baldwin
Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery
R
Why You Should Watch It: One of the best 'cops and robbers' stories of the past few decades with a stellar performance by Kevin Spacey. It has twists and turns till the last minute. It’s a little 90's in the story telling and is sort of slow; think Se7en. Read what we wrote about it back when it was previously available on Netflix Instant.
Have you seen this movie? Did you like it?

The Machinist (2004)
Director: Brad Anderson
Writer: Scott Kosar
Starring: Christian Bale, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón
Genre: Thriller, Drama, Unnaturally Skinny
R
Why You Should Watch It: Looking for a drama thriller that has Christian Bale as an ultra skinny insomniac? Well The Machinist was made just for you. A machinist who can’t sleep is losing his mind. It’s a depressing film, frankly, but it is well made and well acted by Bale. It’s worth a watch if you like Bale, enjoy insomniac and anorexic characters trying to live a terrible existence, or if you are a machinist.

New on Netflix Instant Streaming: December Dump List
It's the beginning of the month again and Netflix Instant Streaming has added some new quality movies and TV shows. Find something new to watch or be reminded of old favorites and watch them again.
Also added this month to Netflix Instant Streaming, some Walt Disney Classics!
New additions: December 24th.

Sleepwalk with Me (2011)
Director: Mike Birbiglia, Seth Barrish
Writer: Mike Birbiglia, Joe Birbiglia, Seth Barrish, Ira Glass
Starring: Mike Birbiglia, Lauren Ambrose, Carol Kane, James Rebhorn, Cristin Milioti
Genre: Comedy, Drama,
PG-13
Why You Should Watch It: Mike Birbiglia aka Matt Pandamiglio is a wannabe stand up who reaches a cross road in his love life while “blowing up” in the Northeast/Midwest small time comedian circuit. If that wasn't enough, he is also dealing with a chronic and dangerous sleep walking problem. From the creative minds and work of Mike Birbiglia and Ira Glass, of WBEZ’s This American Life fame, Sleepwalk with Me had a relatively small theater release and the popularity of the film is very much the work of the two. Loosely based on Mike Birbiglia's real life, you can hear more about it by listening to the many podcasts he has been on in the past 6 months where he talks about it.
Nerdist | You Made It Weird w/ Pete Holmes | This American Life

National Lampoon Christmas Vacation (1989)
Director: Jeremiah S. Chechik
Writer: John Hughes
Starring: Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Juliette Lewis, Johny Galcki, Randy Quaid, Doris Roberts
Genre: Comedy, Family, Christmas
PG-13
Why You Should Watch It: Arguably the best Christmas movie ever made. They just don’t make Christmas comedies like this anymore. Same can also be said for National Lampoon movies. Because any of the new ones coming out are terrible. Well I'm pretty sure most humans know of this movie and have seen it. If you haven't yet, now is your time to join the ranks of all other second and first world humans.

The Babymakers (2012)
Director: Jay Chandrasekhar
Writer: Peter Gaulke, Gerry Swallow
Starring: Paul Schneider, Olivia Munn, Kevin Heffernan, Nat Faxon, Michael Yurchak
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Baby-makin'
PG-13
Why You Should Watch It: This “comedy” is about a couple who have trouble creating a child the old fashioned way. By boning. Turns out the guys little swimmers aren’t all that quick. He previously sold his sperm, while they still worked, as a way to make some extra cash. Now he wants to get that sperm back so it can be used to impregnate his wife the new fashioned way. By not boning. It’s not the funniest or greatest movie I’ve seen but I can see couples or newlyweds enjoying this film.
New additions: December 16th.

Young Adult (2011)
Director: Jason Reitman
Writer: Diablo Cody
Starring: Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, Patton Oswalt
Genre: Comedy, Drama, Independent
NR (Basically a soft R)
Why You Should Watch It: Well reason number one is Charlize Theron. So stop reading and go watch. If she doesn't push your buttons, I’ll tell you a bit more about the movie. CT's (that’s what I call her, we’re tight) character is an alcoholic young adult ghost writer who has a mental break down. She heads back home to “woo” her old flame (Patrick Wilson) back after finding out that he just had a child. She meets an old acquaintance from high school that she doesn't remember (Patton Oswalt) and they become friends while she makes a fool of herself time and time again. It’s a slow-ish, semi-depressing indie film but if you’re into that sort of thing, you’ll really enjoy it.
Craigslist Joe (2012)
Director: Joseph Garner
Writer: NA
Starring: Joseph Garner, Kristos Andrews, Gina Keatley
Genre: Documentary, Adventure
NR (Basically a soft R)
Why You Should Watch It: Joey Garner decides to spend 1 month living solely off the generosity of others through Craigslist. He starts off in LA and makes his way north, then east and finds himself in NYC for some time. The road then takes him south, and then back west to San Fran. Along the way he takes a break dancing class, stays with a Dominatrix, volunteers, and meets hundreds of people. It is an eclectic group of people he meets, some odder than others. A lot of them are “free thinkers” who seemingly have great adventures but frankly, they seem crazy to me. Joe really seems to come into his own towards the end which was nice to see because at the beginning he seemed unsure of himself and nervous. Worth a watch if you enjoy adventure, are about to go on your own adventure or just really like Craigslist.
New addition: December 8th.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005-Present)
Creator: Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day
Starring: Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, Danny DeVito, Kaitlin Olson
Genre: Comedy,
Episodes: 84 (7 Seasons)
Network: FX
Why You Should Watch It: It's Always Sunny has been called "Seinfeld on crack," and for good reason. The characters only ever care about themselves and the show involves crack far more often than Seinfeld ever did. It's quick, outrageous, and hilarious. I'm a Sunny Hipster, in that I think the first few seasons are far better than the later seasons. Seasons 1-4 are top notch but from 5 on, there is just a bit too much screaming and the characters have become to charactery. They just seem to be trying too hard to be the chacters they think they have become. If that makes sense (it doesn't). Don't get me wrong, it's still worth a watch and some of the episodes are in the later seasons are great, but the Season 1 & 2 DVD I have of this show is one of my prized possessions.
Originally posted: December 3rd.

Half Baked (1998)
Director: Tamra Davis
Writer: Dave Chappelle, Neal Brennan
Starring: Dave Chappelle, Guillermo Diaz, Jim Breuer, Harland Williams, Rachel True
Genre: Comedy, Crime, Stoner movie
R
Why You Should Watch It: If you have smoked weed more than 3 times and have not seen this movie, you are a terrible person. Stop what you are doing, and watch this movie. Three friends set out to raise the money to bail a friend who mistakenly lands in jail. It’s arguably the best stoner movie of all time. It has some great cameos in it too: Jon Stewart, Willie Nelson, Bob Saget and more! I WANNA TALK TO SAMPSON!
How I Met Your Mother: Season 7 (2005-Present)
Creator: Carter Bays, Craig Thomas
Starring: Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Bob Saget
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Sitcom
Episodes: 160 (7 Seasons)
Network: CBS
Why You Should Watch It: After only seeing a few rouge episodes, here and there, I decided to watch them all. I thought I was too good for the laugh track, but 3.5 seasons in I hardly notice it anymore. The uniqueness of this seemingly standard sitcom keeps me coming back for more. I think to truly enjoy this you'd have to be in your mid to late 20's or older. I know most of these character's "problems" wouldn't matter to me when I was in high school or early years of college. If you're looking for a new 30 minute sitcom to watch obsessively for the next few weeks, this is it.
Scream (1996)
Director: Wes Craven
Writer: Kevin Williamson
Starring: Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Drew Barrymore,
Genre: Crime, Horror, Mystery
R
Why You Should Watch It: This super scary flick has been on Netflix before, but is back again for who knows how long.
Read what I said about it over a year ago, or don't and just watch it.
